There exist a long history of nonviolent cross-border interventions in situations of conflict. This history constitutes a rich source of practical experience, of lessons learned. Howewer, these lessons haver never been drawn together and subjected to sustained scrunity, which means that inadequate progress has been made in fulfilling the potential inherent in these interventions. To remedy this failing, the first step must clearly be to collect the stories of nonviolent cross-border interventions in one place for scrutiny. This is precisely what has been done here. In line with a new and comprenhensive typology developed for this book, various examples of nonviolent cross-border direct interventions, which have been undertaken by activists rather by humanitarian agencies, are described here and the lessons provided by theses interventions are detailed.
