Résumé : "[…] The book is centered on an analysis of the various movements advocating personal nonparticipation in war of any kind with endeavor to find nonviolent means of resolving conflict. Pacifist ideals, whether derived from religious or humanist motives, range from strict vegetarianism to forms of war resistance, which do not all involve a ban on taking human life under nay circumstances. The text opens with an introductory chapter discussing the historic roots of twentieth-century pacifism. Chapters follow on conscientious objection in the two world wars and in the post-1945 era. Other sections of the book deal with the vicissitudes of pacifism during the interwar years, the role played by pacifists in the antinuclear movement after World War II as well as in the resistance to the Vietnam War, and the philosophy of Gandhian nonviolence and its impact on pacifist action inside India and in other parts of the world. The authors devote a chapter to pacifist outreach in the post-1945 world, especially with respect to Catholicism and Judaism; they also deal with the changes in the thought and practice of historic peace churches during the same period. In conclusion they attempt to assess the condition of pacifism in the century's final decade." [Dos du livre]
